New York Fashion Week: We Make You Confident in Your Clothes, or we are out of business.

Check out this blog post on our time learning from designer 3.1 Phillip Lim this past month at NYFW 2024.

We've got all kind of stories, tips, and tricks to share about our time at New York Fashion Week recently, but the experience that takes the cake for us was most definitely our time at the designer session Q&A with designer 3.1 Phillip Lim.  This year, NYFW offered opportunities for creatives to come and hear from designers during these sessions.  It was hosted in the backstage area, which was SO FUN and included free coffee from Bluestone Lane, getting your hair done by Tresseme, and more!

In a lot of ways, hearing Phillip's talk on his way of doing business and reaching his customers was very encouraging for us.  In a world of high fashion, trends, and things that can feel inaccessible, everything Philip said about his clothing line went back to two things:

  • Do what you love & what you are passionate about

  • Serve the people around you.

For Phillip, an Asian American, this has meant stay in his office in China town and make and design clothes for the people he knows who are in his context.  One of the most gripping things he said was... "If the clothes don't fit, I am out of business.  If you don't feel good in the clothes, I am out of business.  If the zipper doesn't work, I am out of business."  Everything seemed to go back to reaching the customer and the people in his life.

For us at Welldressed, we feel so similar.  Our desire is for everything in our business to be about you- our customers, our clients, and our friends.  If the clothes are inaccesible, too expensive for your budget, don't make you feel more sure of yourself- we have not done our job.  Everything we do goes back to helping you feel confident in your clothes- end stop.  If we aren't doing that, we are out of business.

Trends Don’t Dictate- They Inspire.

Hear from expert personal stylists on their take on how we should view trends!

For some reason, I find myself hearing more about trends in the fall more than any other season.  Maybe it's because there are such significant purchase to make with them (jeans, jackets, boots)?  Maybe it's still the "back to school shopping" that lingers in us even as adults?  There's something about mid-late August that has us thinking about buying new things and wondering what the hottest new trends are.

The problem with doing this every August (or if you do it seasonly, each season) is that trends change.  Just about every season.  So this implies two things....
1). We have money to buy new clothes every season (not many people can do this)
2)  Our style changes constantly depending on "what's trending."

But let us be clear- trends aren't bad!  We just have to keep them in their proper place. Our hot take is that trends shouldn't be followed until and after you know your personal sense of style, and once you've built your capsule wardrobe with basic pieces. Otherwise, you'll never have the main pieces you need, and you will be constantly confused by what your style is. We have to remind myself of the same things! We LOVE trends, purely because they are fun, and trend casting is enjoyable to keep up with!

The fun in trends, though, is that after you've established generally what kind of style you like to wear/portray, and you have your classic pieces on lock, you can just incorporate trends in here and there! So... trends don't dictate what our style is, but rather, they help inspire us to take something popular and make it our own.

That being said... if you enjoy following trends, here's a few we've spotted this fall:

You'll probably spot me wearing studs & grommets, while you'll see Abby trying out the lace skirts. Why? Because they speak to our personal sense of style and we can't wait to make them our own.

Where Sports Meets Style.

It’s no secret that tennis is one of the most stylish sports out there. While I (Megan) have NO athletic ability whatsoever- I’m all about a cute tennis skort, and everyday, effortless jewelry. It took me back to my childhood. My Grandmother has always been very active (wish I got that gene) and growing up she didn’t miss a match at her country club playing doubles with friends. While my Grandmother is more of an everyday/casual lady when it comes to clothing, she always had the best jewelry (and still does). I remember as a girl being obsessed with her gold chain necklace complete with a tennis racket charm that she’d wear everyday. Her staples with diamond studs and classic gold hoops. Yep, she wore these pieces when she played tennis at the club. I’m HERE for sports where they celebrate wearing jewelry!!

Enough of my childhood musings…. a couple weeks ago, our dear friend Anna invited us to a very special event at the jewelry store she manages on King St- Gorjana. We’ve done some fun collabs with Anna/Gorjana before, so we LOVE being on her invite list.

Each year in Charleston in the spring, the city hosts a tennis tournament on Daniel Island called Credit One Charleston Open. Even if you don’t enjoy tennis, it’s the most fun event to attend. It’s outside, there’s frose, and it’s inevitable that you will run into friends. Plus- it’s the PERFECT chance to show off a cute outfit. To celebrate the tournament, Gorjana hosted a party that Monday evening featuring Jessica Pegula. Jessica (or “Jessie” as her friends call her) is a world-renown tennis champ. She’s currently the best women’s tennis player in the US- and 5th world wide. Just kind of a big deal. She recently launched a collaborative line with Gorjana, and we got to go and see the jewelry and meet Jessica herself!

This was me telling Jessica I loved her Prada slides. Literally- she had such a fun, effortless Cali girl type style that we loved. She also told me she liked my outfit so… that’s a win. The next day for Bronson & I’s date night, we got to go watch her play in the tournament (and I got to flex that I met her the night before… LOL). She won her match and crushed it!

Looking to incorporate some tennis girl type style in your wardrobe? Check out this adorable tennis skort we love from Abercrombie. You can wear it running errands around town, at brunch with friends, or playing tennis (HA). We also love this tennis bracelet from Anthro (add to cart!!)

What color jewelry should you wear?

NYFW: How Coloring Impacts Jewelry!

Long before we showed up in NYC for NYFW this February, we had seen a new color specialist on the rise in NYC on TikTok.  Ari/rang has started a business where she shows clients which colors look best on them with their skin tones.  You may have heard of this concept, as getting colors done has been on the rise for a minute.  However- Ari’s business goes above and beyond by even has you bring all your makeup an show which makeup colors & contours look best with your skin!

We were hoping to book a session with Ari, but unfortunately she was not booking for her normal services due to NYFW.  When we went to a show during our time there, she hosted a booth and we got to stop by and meet her!  Even though we weren't able to do the FULL color package, one of the things she did with us was show us which jewelry looked best with our skin tones- silver or gold?

Both of us wear both metals!  While we both own more gold, we aren't anti silver.  However- when Ari held up the silver to my face (Megan)- it brightened my complexion.  When she held up the gold- it was harsh and dulled out my skin.  Her tips to me were to wear silver around my face, and when I wear gold, make sure it's not super yellow.  Thanks for your help, Ari!

Part of why we are learning this, is so we can grow in becoming more knowledgeable to help you build accessories and colors that best suit your skin & complexion!!   And if you are ever in NYC… you should schedule a booking with Ari- and in the meantime, follow her on instagram!
